Chapter 15

“Where's Dat?” Hannah’s innocent eyes mirrored her question. Chloe sighed. Levi had passed months ago and still her young daughter didn't seem to understand. She couldn’t grasp the concept that he was gone permanently.

“Remember, Hannah? I told you that Dat went to live with Jesus after the barn caught on fire.” Chloe glanced out the window to the newly built barn. The community rallied together shortly after the inferno to build a new barn for her family. Every day, meals were brought by members of their church district with words of sympathy and encouragement. And while those things were appreciated, she’d much rather have Levi’s arms wrapped around her at night, his kind smile in the morning.

“But I want ‘im to lib wif us. When's he comin' back? He's been gone too wong alweady,” Hannah whined.

“Oh, liewi.” Tears filled Chloe's eyes and she quickly brushed them away so her daughter wouldn't see. “He's not coming back. But someday we'll get to go see him.” Oh, those words were still so difficult to say! He's not coming back...

“Can we go see ‘im soon, Mamm? I miss 'im awfuwy bad.” She stuck out her bottom lip to demonstrate her displeasure.

Chloe drew Hannah into her arms and pulled her close to her chest. “I do, too. But we have to wait until God says it's time before we can see him again.” Movement from inside Chloe's belly caused Hannah to giggle.

“Vas Dat my baby bruder?” she asked, wide-eyed.

“Jah, it was the boppli. But we don't know if it's a brother or sister.” Chloe reminded Hannah.

“Will Dat get to see 'im?”

“Jah, he'll see him from Heaven.”

“How do ya know Dat is in Heaben and not the bad place?”

“That is a good question.” Chloe thought on how to best use this opportunity to share the Gospel with her curious daughter. “Do you remember when Dat read the Bible one night and told us about how Jesus died on the cross?”

Hannah wrinkled her little nose and put a finger on her chin, pondering her mother's question. “Oh, Jah, I 'member. ’Twas awfuw sad.”

“Jah, it was. But Jesus had to die to take away our sins,” she explained.

“We can't go da Heaben wif our sins, ain't so?” Hannah asked.

“That's right, Hannah. You're such a schmeart maedel,” she lovingly patted her hand. “Heaven is perfect, so there can't be any sin there.”

“Do I gots sin?” Hannah's eyes grew wide at the possibility.

“The Bible says that all have sinned.”

“I don't wanna hab sin. I wanna go da Heaben wif Dat.” At that realization, tears sprung up in Hannah's eyes.

“Then ya gotta ask Jesus to save you and take your sins away.”

“Can I aks 'im now, Mamm?”

“Jah, Hannah. You can do it right now.” She smiled.

Hannah put her two small hands together and bowed her head. She opened one eye and peeked up at her mother. “Is it aw wight if I pway da Jesus in pwibate?”

Chloe chuckled. “Jah, that would be just fine. I'll go downstairs and start on lunch.
